Current Art Practice
David Trout is a visual artist with a strong background in painting. His work has been based on both figuration and abstraction. His early work relates to his background in South Africa, especially with reference to the Apartheid era. There is a strong semi biographical content that continues to reemerge in later work. Another strong influence on his work is the reference to travel, nomadism and displacement. It is often through being in another space that one is able to see one's own environment more clearly.
In the late 90's David Trout began to intergrate the use of digital media into his art practice. He looked for ways of intergrating painting with the digital image. He also started to incorporate the photographc image as an important element in his practice. The notion of fragments, moments and the complexities of layers of time, thoughts and ideas continue to provide inspiration.
More recently David Trout is starting to explore the moving image with the use of video and installation.
