David Trout
David Trout was born in Johannesburg, South Africa . He completed both his undergraduate B.A.F.A. degree and postgraduate Diploma in Painting at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, the University of Cape Town. He studied under Professor Kevin Atkinson and Stanley Pinker.
He received scholarships to study in the United States where he completed a three year Master Degree in Fine Art in Illinois at SIU. In 1989, he moved to the United Kingdom where he lived in Brighton and Leeds and taught at the Jacob Kramer College of Art (Leeds College of Art) , Leeds Polytechnic and Doncaster School of Art.
In 1991 He migrated to Australia where he settled in Melbourne. He has taught at several institutions including Victoria University, Monash University and has developed an experimental course in Interactive Digital Media that integrates new media with traditional art practice.
The artist regularly travels overseas and has recently attended the Art Cologne (2011, 2010), Dokumenta (2017), Skulpture Projekt - Münster (2017), the Venice Biennial (2017, 2011,2009) and the Lyon Biennial (2011) Paris - La Trieannale - Intense Proximity (2012) as well as galleries in Berlin, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Italy and South Africa. David has recently been in Europe attending the Venice Biennial in May 2019, entitled " May we live in interesting times".
In 2019, the artist took up a position as Head of Newcastle Art School - TAFE NSW and current resides in Newcastle where he also teaches and has established a studio.
